What's covered with Excess Protect Cover?
Our Excess Protect Cover add-on allows you to claim back your policy excess when you make a claim due to fire, theft or an accident, regardless of fault.
What’s an excess?
An insurance excess is the amount you have to contribute towards the overall cost of a claim.
How it works
With Excess Protect Cover, you can get a refund for your claim excess – even if you’re at fault – as long as you do it within 6 months of the accident.
How to make an Excess Protect claim
If you have Excess Protect Cover and want to make a claim, you'll need to contact our partner, Coplus. Please only do this after your motor insurance claim is settled.

How do I claim on Excess Protect?
If your policy is effective on or after 01/01/2023
If you have Excess Protect Cover included in your policy and would like to claim, please contact our Excess Protect partner, Coplus, following the settlement of your claim under your motor insurance policy:

In order for us to help you more efficiently, please quote ‘Motor Excess Protect’ in all communications.
If your policy is effective before 01/01/2023
If you have Excess Protect Cover included in your policy, please contact our Excess Protect partner CPP Secure to make your claim.
Please do this at your earliest opportunity after the settlement of your claim under your motor insurance policy, ideally within 31 days, using one of the following options:

CPP Secure will register your claim and send you a claim form for completion and return, together with details of the documents that you are required to supply in support of your claim.

What extra benefits do I get with Excess Protect?
With Excess Protect you’ll get your excess refunded following the settlement of a claim by 1st Central (excluding windscreen only claims) resulting from:
- Fire*
- Theft*
- Food
- Vandalism
- An accident that was your fault
- An accident that was partly your fault
- An accident where you are unable to recover your excess from a liable third party within six months
If you take out Excess Protect Cover with your car insurance you can:
- Enjoy peace of mind knowing that you won’t be responsible for a large excess bill in the event of a car insurance claim
- Choose your own level of cover from £300 to £1,000
- Make multiple claims on Excess Protect up to the value of cover you choose
- Make an Excess Protect claim via an easy to complete online form

What's not included in Excess Protect?
You'll not be able to use Excess Protect to claim back your excess where:
- A claim relates only to glass repair or replacement
- Your claim is declined or if the claim value is less than the excess
- You claim on Excess Protect more than 31 days following the settlement of your claim by 1ST CENTRAL
- Your excess has been or will be reimbursed by a third party
